Learn Rails Testing Live and In Person

Overview

This will be a one-day where attendees can learn testing principles by seeing live critiques and improvements of real Rails test suites.

What you’ll learn includes how to:

  • How to write meaningful tests
  • How to write tests that are easy to understand
  • What kinds of tests to write and why
  • What to write tests for and what not to
  • How to keep your test suite organized and understandable

From the attendees, a few volunteers will be selected to share their projects in front of the group. We’ll discuss the volunteers’ test suites and do some pair programming to improve the quality of the tests.

Who should attend?

This workshop is open to developers of all skill levels interested in improving their Rails testing practices.

Workshop format & schedule

  • 9:00 AM: Workshop begins
  • 12:00 PM: Break for lunch (not provided)
  • 2:00 PM: Session resumes
  • 5:00 PM: Workshop concludes

After the workshop, all attendees are invited for a casual outing for food and drinks—plus more talk about testing!

About Jason Swett

Jason Swett is the host of The Code with Jason Podcast and author of The Complete Guide to Rails Testing. He has spoken at RubyConf, RailsConf and many other conferences and meetups around the world.

  • Q: Do I need to bring anything?
    A: Bring your laptop with a Rails project on it if you’re interested in having your test suite (gently) critiqued and improved in front of the group.
  • Q: What language will the workshop be conducted in?
    A: The workshop will be conducted in English.
  • Q: What about food?
    A: Lunch will not be provided, but we will break for two hours at noon. After the workshop, join us for an optional dinner and drinks.
